Sunderland - Wigan

All fart and no smell (Oh, and a tactically inept manager)

1
Bruce

Close the door on the way out

Steve Bruce is a nice bloke, I have no doubt about that.  It is possibly why it has took me so long to get on his back.  But after yesterday, I have no doubt in my mind that he should not be kept on as the manager of my team.  It may seem then, that after all his good press conferences and all his guile in the media spotlight, as soon as he gets in the dugout he loses his mind. Why you ask?  Well here is a selection of my views of what he is doing wrong.

Team Selection

Yet again he went on and chose to put Cattermole and Colback in the same midfield.  Now I am not doubting any of their talent, but the fact that they are similar players leads me to believe that they can’t play together, which has been plain to see in many games this season.  Our one home win this season, a comfortable 4-0 win against a resilient Stoke side took place with Vaughan and Gardner as the central midfield pairing.  It was Vaughan’s calm passing and simple football that kept us ticking that day, and predominantly got us the win.  But yet again, Bruce does not look at it this way, and just insists on playing the Catts and Colback combination.

Tactics

Playing one striker against the leagues lowest place team, simple as that.  What is the point in having Ji on the books of he is never going to get a start?  Also, by then end of the game there was a central midfielder playing at left back, and a left midfielder playing right back.  And lo and behold it was a defensive error that gave Wigan their winning goal.

Substitutions

Who the hell in football changes the whole of their central midfield part way through the game?  Swapping the nucleus of the team on the sixty sixth minute is never going to bode well for the rest of the game.  Just one change would have sufficed and would not have had such a damaging effect on the “flow” of the football being played.  Also, just to top it off, it was plain to see that the game was crying out for another striker.  I could even go as far as saying that it could have done with two more, after Bendtner’s abysmally lazy (Chimbonda-esque) performance, which was not too dis-similar to Kieran Richardson’s effort.  But yet again it takes Bruce until the eighty-sixth minute before he brings on Ji (our only recognised striker on the bench).  Again, what was the point in signing him to play 5 minutes at the end of every match?

There are so many things I can pick up on that I believe helped our downfall in yesterdays game, but the more I think about them the less it seems feasible for Bruce to stay on.  As a firm believer of giving people second chances, it seems that Bruce is on his third with me.  The two baron runs in the 09/10 and 10/11 seasons took the piss, but this is just the final straw.

As I am writing this, I am getting more and more infuriated with the goings on at my club, on the field and in the dugout.  Whereas off the field it seems we are on the up with a great line-up of concerts for over the summer of 2012.  So well done to all who managed to pull the strings for that!  I wonder if Chris Martin can play left midfield?

Thumbs up

So, whats good about online blogs?

Here in my first blog I am going to be looking at three blogs that I regularly look at and explain to you what I think is good about them.

www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/football
The good thing about this blog is that it is simple. It is easy to find the content that you want and also it is easy to to read with a good contrast between text colour and the background. On a personal note, it is good to see that there is a range of blog topics, i.e, it talks about a range of subjects in the world of football. There are places for readers to comment on the blogs, which means they can vent their feelings towards the topic in the blog. Giving a good feeling of user interaction.

www.footballblog.co.uk
This website is similar to the BBC blogging page in a sense that is it simple and there is a good contrast between text and background. This makes it clear to read and gives it a proffesional look. One thing that makes these blogs slightly better than the BBC ones in my opinion is that there are images on some of the blogs. This gives me a sense of what the blog is about and gives it a more interactive feel. Also similar to the first site, it is good to see that the readers can comment on the blogs, which gives another good sense of interaction.

www.whoateallthepies.tv
On my third website it is clear to see that this is the least similar to the others. It contains much more images and also includes videos. It has a more colloquial feel and I feel that the target audience age will most certainly be lower for this website than it is for the others. There is an informal feel about the blogs posted on the website, that gives it a more personal feel, meaning it is actually as if the writer is venting their feelings, without real concern for upsetting the reader, i.e, curse words. Yet again, it is good to see that readers are free to comment on the blogs.

As you can see from the blogs that I read, they are all very similar in topic, but different aesthetically. Personally, I feel that these differences make reading one of these blogs after the other not boring, but interesting in a sense that each website is refreshing and different in its own way.
